I think it is safe to say that there has never been a blog theme for which the Abigail Phelps Series is more qualified! Today we're talking about our books' soundtracks. For some, a soundtrack will be made up of songs which inspired the writing of the story, while others will focus on songs which they imagined playing in the background of their story. Still others will give you songs which will put you in the desired mood for reading. Well, my soundtrack does all of those things. And it's all Billy Joel...

If you click on the album covers above, you will be taken to a Spotify playlist. You will have to have a Spotify account to listen, but it's free to sign up and, let's face it...you really need to have a Spotify account. (For the record, I have had a Spotify account for all of two months, I believe.) If you click on the link, the soundtrack you will find is 32 Billy Joel songs. 32?!? Yes. The same number of chapters in Book One of the Abigail Phelps Series, I've Loved These Days.
Each chapter of each book of the Abigail Phelps Series (I've Loved These Days, Scenes From Highland Falls, and Two Thousand Years) is the title of a Billy Joel song. Each chapter's title song is the perfect soundtrack for what is happening at that point in the story. And the book titles? Well, yes...they're Billy Joel titles, too. Book two, Scenes From Highland Falls, is actually a combination of two songs - "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" and "Summer, Highland Falls" - which, in their separate ways, represent what is happening in that book. I've Loved These Days is where we learn of Abigail's delusional life of fame and stardom, but in book two, we begin to discover the truth. And the truth is even more difficult to believe. The two songs combine as Abigail's two realities begin to come together, summed up perfectly by the following lyric from Billy Joel's "Summer, Highland Falls":
Our reason coexists with our insanity
And though we choose between reality and madness
It's either sadness or euphoria
By the time we reach the end of book three, Two Thousand Years, we are aware of Abigail's reality and we understand her delusion. And we're given an epilogue in which Billy Joel himself makes an appearance to perform his song, "Two Thousand Years" - written for Abby. Of course, it's just part of the delusion. Or is it? Reality is in the eye of the beholder.

Time is relentless
And as the past disappears
We're on the verge of all things new
We are two thousand years

"The very first time you met me you knew that he would never be the same again, didn't you? For the record, I was never the same again either. And while times have changed and opportunities have been lost, I still know in my heart of hearts that I never will be. But we can't go back, and we can't undo. What's more, I don't really want to. While my life is not perfect, it is uniquely, ridiculously mine, and I would not trade it."

Abigail Phelps has written her memoirs, but the world has never heard of her. So why should anyone care? Perhaps no one would, if the letter in which Abigail reflects on changing times and lost opportunities weren't addressed to Jacqueline Onassis, and the man who would never be the same weren't John F. Kennedy Jr.

Put aside all you think you know and jump into the greatest love story the world has never known.
